XK8 to i-Pace

Member Nigel Robinson has swapped his XK8 for a Jaguar i-Pace. Was it the right decision? Should he be hauled in front of the committee? Read the article here.

Free charging at Cambridge services. Took 45 minutes to top up to 80% by which time we had a coffee and a cake from the Patisserie Valerie there before continuing our journey. Could have made our daughters without topping up, but would have then have to plug into her home before returning.

230 mile range is what the display shows. Not 294 as advertised - because we have had a cold spell - uses more electricity to keep us warm at 23C when it's 3C outside. Plus 'comfort' mode uses more than 'eco' mode there is also a low power mode with no hot water to washer jets, no heated seats, steering wheel, and no a/c. Meridian sound system is very good, in eco mode does not use all the subs so that saves electricity and extends the range. Plus preheating before use, plus many short journeys of less than 2 miles mean the 'guess o meter' shows 230 not 294. Not to say enjoying 0-60 in 4.5 seconds is not the most economical of driving. XKR 25mpg urban cycle was more like 21 in real terms.

We always use the Jaguar incontrol iPhone app so Car is always nice and warm, defrosted, demisted when we get in. Also gives remote locking, alarm, windows, boot and the small froot. I was disappointed that to weekly check the fluid levels was awkward with panels and catches to unscrew until I found the app displays levels, tyre pressures and other data on the iPad/iPhone.

Auto steer with adaptive cruise (autopilot) is not the best on M6 Toll - lanes are slightly wider than M6 itself so the car drifts in the lane. If the road markings are not clear, it wants you to take over. Self parking is very fussy - car likes to go back and forward to get exactly equidistant between spaces rather than 'that’ll do'.

Used the flight tracker yesterday - car displays flight info if you are waiting for a plane and interrupts your music to tell you the flight has landed.

In snow - amazing.

But then it is all wheel drive with latest Range Rover 4x4 technology. Except better than one engine split through a 8 speed auto box because power is individual by direct drive in individual wheels. Wading is same 22" depth as discovery. Hill descent/ascent control great.

Have 7kW point (£500 grant but was still £400 to pay because of new consumer unit) at home where we park by our stables and sometimes use the 13A 'granny charger' as they are called because are really only 10A in our garage.

Have had this loan iPace from Jaguar Crewe twice - software updates and a recall.

One of the software recalls updates fixed a problem when two phones are paired, one in use, then if the second rings it cuts the first phone off.

Ecotricity fast charging points on the M6 (the CCS D.C. connector is the fast one) are unreliable. Often cuts out or fails to connect. 400+V and 100+Amps is what goes between the charge pump and the car with computer handshake building charge up gradually then slowing down. Slightest glitch in 'pump' - not car - causes this and other errors on the pump:

Takes a phone call to reboot the 'pump' but sometimes is then 'off line' and out of use or have to wait 45 minutes for the failed session to finish. A.C. charge lead works, no problem, but what they call fast a.c. is 8-12 hours - fine at home, but not on M6 services on a journey. Lots of Polarplus charge points at car parks, hospitals. Even lamp posts in London now have ev sockets.

Our labradoodle dog does not like anything that has an electric motor but is fine in the car. Except the ticker indicator is loud when the car is so quiet so he thinks it's time to get out.

Less than 12mph sounders on the car alert pedestrians to your presence with a gentle whirring otherwise (blind in particular) people would not know you are there.

Power is 400HP equivalent so not much different from XKR except is instant and all wheel drive ensures it is more usable.

2.3 tons is mainly the 432 lithium - manganese pouch batteries which have a 8 year 80% warranty so to preserve life only use from 3-85 kW I.e. not ever fully charging to the 90kW 100%. Cost of the battery is half that of the car hence a few comments that the quality is not that of a £70k car. Options add up so even the 'first edition' at £84k can easily top £90k with options like the sports seats you see on all the photos.

Apparently 22" wheels have a higher rolling resistance than my 20" ones so also reduce the range. The car has smart climate which means it only heats the bit of the car where somebody is sat so that helps the range.

If you get chance to go on the Jaguar art of performance tour do so, or even go and try Jaguar full electrification at a dealer.

I did miss not having a convertible in the last few sunny days and I guess the burble, bark and roar.

Great always being able to fill up at home and always having a full tank at home. Still better to sell the electricity from our solar panels at 55p per unit and fill up the car by paying 15p per kWh from the grid. £12 gives approx 230 miles of range with my driving and journeys.
